SXXI TASK 1 - Interstitial Space -

can say that a gap is the space between two bodies or two parts of one body. can also be understood as an event that occurs between two planned activities such as: an intermission. In the field of architecture, the gaps, most of the time, resulting spaces are not formalized. By their nature "not planned" are often "non-places" where you can experience "the unprecedented" and unforeseen activities occur.

From the standpoint of building construction, the interstitial spaces are often areas that are hidden, for example, the areas of networks and facilities, the interior spaces of partitions, suspended ceilings, floors, etc.. Some times these hidden places, when they come to light readable processes behind the construction giving degrees of truth to the work and thus "beauty" that results from the intelligibility of things.

From the point of view of the structures, the interstitial spaces are of interest to consider because it can get "mild structural thickness" replacing the robustness of the elements supportive. Examples of this are the flying buttresses of Gothic cathedrals versus the buttresses of a Romanesque building, or a wooden lattice girder versus brick vault.

interstitial spaces can also be seen from a material standpoint. suffices to note for example the light that enters a narrow valley, texture and color that separates the kernel of the fruit of the medlar of its shell or space padded to protect a saxophone blows against leather armor.

Objectives. The main objectives of the following year are twofold: 1: find observations which are then converted into design opportunities. In other words, it is discovered by observing and drawing features of the object that may result in material design. These traits can be conceptual, material or geometry. 2. Discover the laws governing the game or build a space between two bodies or two parts of one body. These rules are made the most of the time by a geometry-oriented, measures, repetitions, exceptions, material properties such as hardness or softness, brightness or opacity, inert material, live material, etc.

Questions to answer: How is the geometric construction. How generated form = Form resistant resistant structure. matter how it is distributed. How matter contributes to the protection from the external environment. How is the relationship between resistive elements and soft elements. How is the relationship notif and Container and Content. How is the relationship between full and empty. As is organized as follows: what are the hierarchies, the accounting and repetitions that can be distinguished. How are these laws of economics. What are internal forms and what are the external resulting in the gap. As is the lighting qualities if any. How are the acoustic qualities if any.

Order: scan an object is requested from the list provided below to maintain a focus of study, the interstitial space defined as the space is between two bodies or two parts of one body, as already mentioned above. Consequently, it is not possible to dissociate the resulting space the boundaries that contain it. Interest, therefore, the study of the interstitial space as a result of external forces that affect other inmates and form such boundaries. As will be key to identify the pieces of these boundaries and the role they play in the construction of the gap. You must specify its formal aspects, geometric and structural materials. The frame of the study should be both at the aggregate as of the piece.

Methodology: The analysis should be performed through a diligent exercise of lifting the object of study, using only the technical drawing as a tool of observation.

Delivery: In groups of 2. In vertical sheet ½ sheet (55 x 77cm)
L1: FORM: components and parts. Isometric Exploited scale. Indicating the name of each piece.
L2: STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR. Plant / sa-scale dimensions. Court / s scale heights. Must be clearly evidenced the relationship between the parties.
L3: BUILDING MACRO AND MICRO. Survey of key elements in building the gap to a level of detail.
L4: MATERIALS AND SPATIAL QUALITIES. free representation of the interstitial space through the material definition, brightness, opacity, color.
